The 2015 Women’s world cup keeps giving fans of soccer some of the best matches around. This clash between rivals Sweden and the US at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, was no exception.
After a lot of dribbling, punting and snarling, the game ended in a 0-0 tie. The U.S. now leads Group D and faces Nigeria on June 16 in Vancouver. Also on June 16, Sweden will face Australia at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, Alberta.
United States Vs. Sweden: This Time, It’s Personal
Sweden was ranked No.5 in the world before the World Cup. Team USA was No.2. The US had some extra motivation going into this game. Their former coach, Pia Sundhage, made some brutal remarks about them prior to this match. Pia, who led the US Women’s team to two Gold Medals and a World Cup Final, returned to her native Sweden in 2012, becoming Team Sweden’s coach. While speaking with The New York Times, Pia said some heavy remarks about her former players: Hope Solo is “a piece of work,” Carli Lloyd was a challenge to coach and that Abby Wambach shouldn’t be a starter!
